Cliff Reid
BORN: 1948-2010 (deceased)
LANGUAGE: Ngaanyatjarra
COUNTRY: Blackstone, W.A.
Cliff was a ‘bush baby’, meaning he was born out bush with his mother
and father, travelling in a largely nomadic lifestyle. He grew up in the Jameson area and went
to school for a short time at Warburton Mission.
Cliff started painting in 2003 and loved to tell the many stories
associated with his paintings.
Cliff Reid
lived at Blackstone in Western Australia which is located approximately 1350 kms
north east of Perth, near the South Australian border, with his traditional
lands overlapping into South Australia.
Cliff was a
rare artist whose works stands alone in style from other artists in the region.
In his raw, figurative fashion, in a bold and powerful manner he painted
traditional stories that can directly 'communicate' and which are instantly
identifiable to the wider community who are accustomed to seeing paintings
containing traditional symbolism or pure abstract from this region.
Cliff sadly passed away in 2010, leaving behind his legacy of seven
children – 3 to his first wife, and 4 to his second wife.
